Racked 2006 Merlot

This morning I racked the 2006 “Gardner’s Block” Merlot from the beer keg into three carboys. The last carboy is a little short so I am settling out the sludge with the hopes of topping off. I opened a half gallon bottle of the same wine to use for topping but it was yucky so I pored it out. This bottle was the last of the pressing and full of solids. No great loss. I tasted it this morning and was surprised at the acidity and tannins even considering its youth. One sec, I’ll taste it again right now. Continue reading Racked 2006 Merlot

Winery Setup

The barrels are on the rack in the basement. Things are getting organized. This week I will rack the 2006 Merlot, taste it, call Chuck and decide if we should bottle to free up some space. Here are a few photos. Click to see [...]

Trip to PMR Vineyards

I went up to MR Vineyards on Mt. Eden today with Linus and his family. We pulled a few barrel samples of their own wine (personal consumption). As with my own 2006 Cabernet, theirs is huge and shows great potential for being a wonderfully powerful and complex wine. The 2005 Cabernet showed nice structure, but a [...]

2006 Barrel Tasting

Chuck’s parents were in town so we pulled a barrel samples of the 2006 Other Vineyard Merlot and Cabernet and PMR Cabernet. The first two were well balanced and close to accessible, they both have a the subtle raison flavor found in the 2005 Merlot that is overpowering to some, loved by others.

The PMR Cabernet was [...]

Goodbye Duane Cronin

Duane Cronin was my mentor. He was a great winemaker, boss and friend. He taught me to pick grapes, prune, drive a large truck through San Francisco and to enjoy life. He died January 14, 2007. Although I hadn’t spoken to him in a few years, his death hit me hard. I will miss him. [...]

No More Fools

Chuck’s exhaustive research of the World Wide Web forces us back to the drawing board.

Hey Chuck, how about Cold Mountain Winery. Cold Mountain is a book of Zen poems by [...]

Crusher Stemmer Purchase: Our First Capitol Asset

Chuck and I bought a crusher/stemmer a few weekends ago from a very interesting–and award winning–winemaker name Richard Watkins, from Scott’s Valley, soon to be from Paso Robles. He shared a bottle of his own Tempranillo, it was delicious. If anyone wants to buy a gorgeous house in Scott’s Valley, all set up to make wine, [...]

Thanksgiving

The 2005 Merlot and 2004 Cabernet were big hits during Thanksgiving at “The Ranch.” The name “Two FOols” was well received. The cab seems to have mellowed out a lot since the last time I tasted it–better integrated and smoother.

We also had a bottle of the 2004 Chardonnay that was left over in their fridge [...]
