This morning I racked the 2006 “Gardner’s Block” Merlot from the beer keg into three carboys. The last carboy is a little short so I am settling out the sludge with the hopes of topping off. I opened a half gallon bottle of the same wine to use for topping but it was yucky so I pored it out. This bottle was the last of the pressing and full of solids. No great loss. I tasted it this morning and was surprised at the acidity and tannins even considering its youth. One sec, I’ll taste it again right now. The nose has the same characteristics of the 2005, but muted. Not the strong dried plum, but it is there. The acidity is still strong, but the tannins seem to have mellowed with some time in the glass. Overall I like it, but I am not sure if that unique flavor is something I like. Maybe I should open one of the 2005′s and see how it’s doing.I also may send a sample out to a lab to confirm ML is complete. As for bottling, I think I will wait for Chuck to come up and taste it.

Did you open the 05 for comparison? What do you mean by unique flavor… hmmm can’t wait to taste.
I haven’t opened an’05 yet, maybe tonight. The flavor I am talking about is the distinct raisonee-porty taste of the ’05. Some people really like it. I am not as keen.
Another tasting note: I drank a full glass with dinner that night and really enjoyed it. That “flavor” became more of a butterscotch and vanilla component and less of the raison. Very nice.
I am going to call Levi today and get a set date for picking.
